When I first moved to Indianapolis, I had no idea who Mickey Maurer was. People would whisper his name in hushed tones, like he was some big deal. Turns out he was.
When I worked at the State Health Department, he was the Indiana Secretary of Commerce — which made us colleagues by the wildest stretch of the imagination — but he got that position by being smart and on the cutting edge of what he did.
He created one of the first cable TV systems through Indiana and Michigan. He started Indy’s first racquetball facility, which became the second largest chain of racquetball clubs in the country. He currently owns and publishes The Indianapolis Business Journal, Court and Commercial Record, The Indiana Lawyer, and Indianapolis Prime Times. He also founded The National Bank of Indiana.
This is a man who is clearly at the top of his game in Indiana. Anyone in business in Central Indiana knows the name Mickey Maurer, and has certainly been touched by the fruits of his labors and career in one way or another.
I never met Mickey Maurer, even when we had the same boss, Governor Mitch Daniels (I never met him either, but that’s beside the point), but I’ll have the chance in a couple of days, at Wednesday’s At The Top networking kickoff event. The event starts at 5:30 and runs to 7:30, at the Skyline Club on top of the One America building, at One American Square in Downtown Indianapolis.
I’ve been fascinated by Mickey’s story, and more than curious about how he has managed to be at the forefront of some of the biggest trends, or at the right place at the right time, for many of his ventures.
This Wednesday’s event is going to be the first At The Top networking event, at the Skyline Club, and my company, Professional Blog Service is one of the sponsors.
I’ll also be at the Bingham McHale strategy session for up and coming business professionals, Pitfalls on the Road to the Top. My friend, Matt Schantz, will be one of the speakers, so I’m looking forward to the event. This event starts at 4:30, and it runs right into the main event.
